About this Project:

Two years ago, KIYU-AM radio in Galena sent out  2,000+ programming surveys to almost two dozen villages on the Yukon, Koyukuk and Kuskokwim Rivers, asking listeners what sort of programming they wanted to hear more of on the radio. The most popular request, by far, was for more Native programming like Raven’s Story, which features stories and traditions recorded from Koyukon Elders.
We began to look for ways to create more local Native programming and preserve the stories, traditions and Native language of the Koyukon people.
With assistance from the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) and the Alaska Humanities Forum, we began to build this multimedia archive to share with younger generations and the rest of the community in classrooms and on the radio.
In 2004, we visited Allakaket, Hughes, Huslia, Kaltag, Koyukuk, Manley Hot Springs, Nulato, Rampart, Ruby and Stevens Village to record stories, traditions, and Native language examples from collaborating Elders and community members.
During these visits, we also reviewed goals and priorities for further language and cultural preservation as well as the most respectful and appropriate ways to use the information that was being recorded.
We enjoyed visiting with everyone in the villages and invite any ideas, questions or concerns. Also, if anyone from the Koyukon area now living in Fairbanks or elsewhere would like to share their knowledge or language or knows someone who might, please contact us in Galena at (907) 656-1488.
Thank you,
